After the show ended, he finally broke down, and Bud Abbott told the audience: “Ladies and gentlemen, now that our program is over, I would like to take a moment to pay tribute to my best friend and to a man who has more courage than I have ever seen displayed in the theater. Tonight, the old expression ‘The show must go on,’ was brought home to all of us on this program more clearly than ever before. Just a short time before our broadcast started, Lou Costello was told that his baby son - who would have been one year old in a couple of days-had died. In the face of the greatest tragedy which can come to any man, Lou Costello went on tonight … so that you, the radio audience, would not be disappointed.”

Notes : There is a script available from the 46–12–05 show with the Lion Hunting Trip being the broadcast. However, most people have the show dated as 46–12–12, which has no script available. I believe I have discovered the source of confusion. In the Dec. 5 show is a reference to the Dec. 10 issue of Look magazine. I believe someone dated the show picking the first broadcast date after Dec. 10. Most magazines are distributed well in advance of the issue date. Andrew Steinberg
