Crazy Canuck, E-Mail me - Lost your Addy - Sir Ghoul
Greetings, all. I’m working on the Amos N Andy series for certification by the Old Time Radio Researcher’s Group, a group of Old Time Radio lovers who are striving to assemble the best available examples of radio for future generations. If you love the radio of your youth - or perhaps you Father’s youth, please come check us out. The Amos N Andy show represents a number of things for Old Time Radio. It represents the free-styling nature of the early years of radio, when just about anything could happen. It’s representative of changes with the times, as it changed during its long run over the decades. Finally, it represents 2 guys who made it big, in a profession that they helped to create. Many of the early Sam And Dave shows, which were precursers to Amos N Andy, were preserved for us to hear, but many of the early Amos N Andy shows didn’t survive, and we know them only by surviving scripts, books, etc. The early years of the Amos N Andy series have been passed down as staticky, scratchy sound bites, sometimes difficult to listen to due to the lack of quality. From about 1940, the quality improved quite a bit, making the listener’s job much more palatable. This page is intended to give a running history of the series, to include show availability, and quality. If you have information to add to this record, please drop me a line to let me know, so I can add it to my records. John Liska
Greetings as well, all. I’m also working on the Amos ‘n’ Andy series for certification. I just found out about the OTRR and I want to do my part. — Crazee Canuck.
There are literally THOUSANDS of episodes that have not survived the early years of the series, and will not be reflected in the listings on this WIKI. This WIKI will encompass the four series that are recognized as being part of the Amos N Andy legacy. They Are: Sam N Henry - 1926–1928 Amos N Andy - 1928-1943 The Amos N Andy Show - 1943-1955 The Amos N Andy Music Hall - 1954-1960. Much of the information here will be based on the information found in Elizabeth McLeod’s Episode Summaries. Her research on the matter appears to be the most thorough to date and while her list of the shows has been removed from her site it is still available at Archive.org
As Mr. Liska wrote, there are THOUSANDS of shows that have not survived.

This is actually an episode of the Victory Theatre, a summer of 1942 replacement for the Lux Theatre. This is the very first 30 minute long broadcast featuring Amos ‘n’ Andy.
Here, we begin an entirely new series of Amos N Andy, with a number of drastic changes. In the previous series, the show ran for 6 days a week for 15 minutes. The story lines were slowly enacted over a period of weeks, allowing a richness as never before seen to develop. The boys got into - and out of - their predicaments by the seat of their pants, and their ploddingly slow wits. Correll and Godsen had complete creative control, and used it quite effectively.
Beginning here, the format of the show changes to a 1/2 hour weekly. A creative team is hired to help write each episode, and an ensemble cast is formed to bring many of the major roles to life. Kingfish has, by this time, become the most popular character in the series, and so each episode tends to center around him. Andy, for the most part, is relegated to the role of a slow-witted dunce, whose rare flash of genius occasionally gets him out of trouble. Amos mostly becomes a’second-banana’, adding a bit of padding to a scene, or a push in the direction the plot needs to turn, and on the not-so-rare occasion, pulling Andy’s bacon out of the fire.

Here’s one situation where things get complicated. Most lists title this entry Proposal To Nancy Simpson. Careful listening indicates that the episode matches this Radio Gold Index entry: 10242. The Amos ‘n’ Andy Show. 1951. CBS net origination, AFRS rebroadcast. Andy finds himself engaged to both Nancy Simpson and Hildegarde Jackson, so the Kingfish tells the police that Hildegarde is really “Ptomaine Tillie,” the notorious poisoner. The date is approximate. Amanda Randolph, Bob Mosher (writer), Charles Correll, Ernestine Wade, Freeman Gosden, Harlow Wilcox, Jeff Alexander and His Orchestra, Joe Connelly (writer), Johnny Lee, Millie Bruce, Roy Glenn. 24:40. Audio condition: Very good to excellent. Complete. Also, in the beginning of the show, the movie The Shows of Kilimanjaro is referenced. This movie was in theaters the last week of Novenber, 1951. Lastly, many lists include the entry xx-xx-xx Two Brides For Andy, which I believe to be the same episode. John Liska
