Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar: Episodes 001 - 098

From December 7, 1948 through June 2, 1951:

Audition Program with Dick Powell in the lead role.

Date Aired: 48/12/07
Episode Number: ----
Available: YES
Title: Milford Brooks III
Description: Johnny is hired to keep Mr. Brooks from committing suicide and a $2 million dollar policy from paying off.
Cast: Dick Powell, William Conrad, Betty Lou Gerson, Joseph Kearns, Paul Dudley (writer), Gil Doud (writer), Anton M. Leader (director).
Notes:
  1. Audition program.
  2. "Yours Truly, Lloyd London" on original script.
  3. There is no broadcast log entry for this episode in the New York Times, this date.
  4. Nor the Chicago Tribune, the Los Angeles Times, or the Washington Post.
  5. There is no evidence this episode was ever broadcast.
  6. The program opening seems like it is an introduction to the "New Adventure Series" Johnny Dollar character.
  7. Modified script is broadcast with a different cast March 25, 1949, as Episode 5.
First Line: [Music] "The Columbia Broadcasting System presents... the thrilling new adventure series starring Dick Powell." [Music] "I'm an insurance investigator. My name is Johnny Dollar." "What?" "You heard me, Johnny Dollar, and I can pad an expense account with the best of 'em." [Music] "Yup, I'm a freelance insurance investigator, and I live in Hartford, Connecticut -- at least, that's where I pay rent. My work sees to it that I really live anywhere, except at home. If you're interested in buying me Christmas presents, I take a size 42 suit. Shirts 15 and a half collar, sleeve length 33. My hat size is 7 and an eighth -- except when I wind up a successful case... then it runs about 7 and three eighths. At insurance investigation, I'm just an expert. At making out my expense account, I'm an absolute genius." [Music] "Expense Account: Submitted by Investigator Johnny Dollar. To: Home Office, East Coast Underwriters, Terminal Building, Hartford, Connecticut. Attention: Austin Farnsworth, General Manager. The following is an accounting of my expenditure in the investigation of Milfred Brooks, the Third, for your company."

  4. The New York Times indicates the "Premier" episode of Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar was broadcast on WCBS at 10:30 pm, Friday, Feb 18, 1949.
  5. There is no published broadcast play date on February 11, 1949 for the Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar show.
  6. Promo at the end of the show announces a special CBS broadcast on Sunday, Feb 20, 1949, starting Eddie Albert, about mental hospitals, "Mind in the Shadow, comes to you in a repeat performance".
First Line: "Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar." [Music] "The next half hour has its baggage packed to take a trip with America's fabulous freelance insurance investigator, Johnny Dollar. To: Home Office, East Coast Underwriters, Terminal Building, Hartford, Connecticut. The following is an accounting of my expenditures in the investigation regarding the Parakoff Policy for your company."

"Mind in the Shadows"
  1. NOT A "YOURS TRULY, JOHNNY DOLLAR" EPISODE!
  2. There is evidence in some logs that there was a broadcast Feb 18, 1949 titled "Mind in the Shadows" starring Charles Russell; however, this would not be possible, given the Premier episode, The Parakoff Case, was broadcast on this date.
  3. This evidence further indicates the arbitrarily sequentially assigned episode numbers are off by 1. Episode 1 would be assigned to the documented "Premier" broadcast, "The Parakoff Policy", 49-02-18.
  4. This certified collection continues using the established sequential numbering scheme from Episode 2, "The Slow Boat from China", broadcast 49-02-25.
  5. "Mind in the Shadow": This title was a CBS Special expose-type show, based on a reporters six month research at a mental facility. Starring Eddie Albert, and brought back by popular demand for rebroadcast on Sunday, Feb 20, 1949, WBBM Chicago 9:00-10:00.
  6. The original broadcast of "Mind in the Shadow" was Wednesday, Feb 2, 1949. The following is the promo from the Nebraska State Newspaper: ONE NOTEABLE departure from the usual will be CBS' hour-long documentary Wednesday night, "Mind in the Shadows". The program is built around the dramatic account exploring the problem of mental health in the U.S. Actor Eddie Albert, who will narrate the factual report, heads a capable cast. KFAB at 9:00.
  7. From a Jan 1, 1949 New York Times article: "Mind in the Shadow", a documentary program dealing with bad conditions prevailing in many mental institutions, will be offered by CBS from 10 to 11 P.M. on Wednesday, Feb. 2. Arnold Perl is the writer and Werner Michel will produce.
  8. From Feb 2, 1949 Washington Post: WTOP 10 -- Full hour documentary on mental health, entitled "Mind in the Shadow", starring Edward Albert.
  9. A six paragraph article by Jack Gould was published in the New York Times on Feb 13, 1949, describing the "Mind in the Shadow" program. It also indicated that the show would be "repeated at 12:30 next Sunday afternoon".
  10. From a Feb 13, 1949 Washington Post article by Sonia Stein: CBS' "Mind in the Shadows" documentary on institutions for the mentally ill has been so well received it will be repeated next Sunday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. with the same cast.
  11. Chicago Tribune, New York Times, and Washington Post radio logs for Sunday, Feb 20th, 1949, all indicate that "Mind in the Shadow" was to be broadcast at 12:30 PM (11:30 AM in Chicago).
  12. Promo at the end of The Adventures of Philip Marlowe Episode "The Easy Mark" on Jan 29, 1949, for the broadcast of Mind in the Shadows on Wednesday, February 2, 1949.
