Halls Of Ivy

(redirected from FirstLines.TheHallsOfIvy)

Based on Otter Logs As of Jan 25, 2005

The page mentioned by Andrew is an older copy of the page previously mentioned by Menachem. Since then 3-6 additional shows have been added at so use that page for additional updates.
Walt? January 10, 2006, at 01:25 PM

I just saw this yesterday. In that page is a link to this one:
It has some amazing information. I don't know where that leaves us with this page though. There are other logs that have already been created that could benefit from an overhaul (like Bulldog Drummond: old vs. new) so we should probably take a look at this one to see if more work is needed.

After transcribing about a dozen of Ken Carpenterís First Lines, I checked Walt Pattinsonís website (listed above) for his First Lines. In a small number of instances, Iíve found disagreements on what was said, or how a word was spelled or a line punctuated.

50/03/24, "Professor Gerhardt's Secret"
" known to the student body naturally enough as the Power House." (website version)
" known to the student body, naturally enough, as 'The Powerhouse.'" (my version)

50/05/10, "Mrs. Whitney's Statue"
"...achieves pre-eminence in any particular field prescribes to him the wisdom..." (website version)
"...achieves pre-eminence in any particular field to ascribe to him the wisdom..." (my version)

Walt has done an outstanding job transcribing Ken Carpenterís introductions and I appreciate the chance to compare notes with him while I continue working on this Wiki. Lisa Fittinghoff March 22, 2005

Walt Pattinson and Andrew Steinberg have pointed out that there are "The Halls of Ivy" television soundtracks being mistaken for the radio episodes. This is especially easy to do with scripts being used again. A brief description of the episode would not be enough to tell them apart. However, the scripts were usually altered, so the first lines of the radio episodes often don't match the first lines of the television episodes. In addition to that, the television episodes can be identified with the following:
During the show's introduction, Ken Carpenter always says, "As you enter the gate of Ivy College, you enter a world that is dedicated to the principle 'You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.'" These words aren't spoken in the radio episodes.
You won't find advertising by the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company.
A close listen to the episodes themselves indicate scene shifts that aren't likely (if not impossible) in a live radio broadcast.
The episodes that have television alter egos will be noted in the First Lines page below the episode in question. Lisa Fittinghoff

The shows begin with a tolling bell and an announcement of the show's title, cast and sponsor (the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company). After the chorus sings the school song, Ken Carpenter, the announcer for the show's complete run, sets the scene beginning with, "Welcome again to Ivy, Ivy College that is in the town of Ivy, USA." Later in the series run, Ronald and Benita Colman greet the radio audience before the chorus takes up its song. Both Ken Carpenter's introduction and the first lines of dialogue are given First Lines treatment.Lisa Fittinghoff
