Series Description:
ESCAPE opened with the gripping voice of William Conrad booming out
over the airwaves: "Tired of the everyday grind? Ever dream of a
life of romantic adventure? Want to get away from it all? We offer
you - ESCAPE!". Moussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain", the show's
theme, assisted Conrad in creating the right opening atmosphere.
(The actual series of questions used in the opening varied from week
to week, frequently to match the goings-on of the times.)
The show featured spine-tingling tales from such masters as Joseph
Conrad, Arthur Conan Doyle and Edgar Allen Poe. It was produced by
William N. Robeson, and featured many seasoned radio actors.
ESCAPE was heard on CBS from July 1947 to September 1954. There
were two pilot shows before it's first run. The first pilot was
OUT OF THIS WORLD: "Dead of Night" on February 28, 1947. This show
was repeated as ESCAPE: "Dead of Night" on March 21.
ESCAPE, as a series, started as a summer replacement for half of the
hour normally occupied by THE LUX RADIO THEATER. It then aired for
the 1947-1948 season, on Sundays. During the early half of 1948,
broadcast day was different on east and west coast. Although the
same scripts were used for both east and west cost shows, the opening
was different. The west coast versions used organ music in place of
the full orchestra of the east coast versions. The series again went
to different days for east and west coasts in 1950, but in this case,
the show was the same for both broadcasts.
Unlike the other CBS adventure series, SUSPENSE, which ran from June
1942 to September 1962 almost without interruption, ESCAPE seemed to
have a rough life. It was frequently moved to different days through
out it's run. There were even a couple of long gaps where ESCAPE
left the air, for example, from August 30, 1951 to October 12, 1952.
Still, thanks to solid scripts, excellent acting and high production
values, ESCAPE is remembered as one of the best radio action adventure
series.
ESCAPE was sustained by CBS for all shows, except for April 21, 1950
through August 25, 1950, when it was sponsored by Richfield Oil.
Log Comments:
It is important to note that this log is only as accurate as can be
made from consulting many sources. There are numerious differences
between it and other logs and lists. The main difference is the
handling of the East/West Coast split broadcasts from Jan 07, 1948
through Mar 21, 1948. Many sources list these shows as different
broadcasts, as there are detectable differences in them. This log
assumes they are the same. The East Coast date is used, since it's
the earliest. The West Coast date is also listed below the title for
collectors who may want to collect both versions. This is also done
for the 1950/1951 season when broadcast days were different, even
though there may be no detectable differences. Using this method
results in 231 shows, including auditions instead of 241 using the
other method.
"The Adversary" was listed with two different dates on many sources,
May 6, 1954 and for May 20, 1954. This log assumes May 6 as the
correct date.
"Your Grandfather's Necktie" and it's odd date can be traced back to
a log from 1958, according to Dick Judge. The log assumes this data
is correct.
I've indicated in the chronological log when a script was reused by
adding "(repeat)" after the title. If a script was used more than
once, the repeat number is shown. Repeats do not mean rebroadcast of
the earlier show. Different cast and possibly modified scripts may
be used.
Where known, the author's name of the original work used for script
adaptation is listed below the title. Author names are not shown for
repeats. An alphabetical listing by author is also provided after the
alphabetical title list.
Times given in the chronological listing are shown as ECT and PCT,
for "East Coast Time" and "West Coast Time". By using these
abbreviations, no distinction is needed for daylight-saving time
offset. These were obtained from "The Encyclopedia of American Radio"
by Ron Lackmann and from Terry Salomonson's log.

Listing By Author:
This list is alphabetical, first by author and then by the title of
the author's work. The author's name appears once. All titles that
follow until another author's name are the works of the author. The
third column indicated the date of broadcast. If the work was
dramatized more than once, each date is listed. A comma after the
date indicated the following date is a repeat. The title is not
repeated.
For example, seven John Russell's short stories were adapted, one of
which was used three times and one was done twice. Therefore, the
entry for "Russell, John" needs ten lines to list the seven shows on
ten dates.
Titles for which no author's name is known are at the end of the list
(currently 83).
