Series Description:

Edgar Rice Burroughs' "Tarzan" first appeared on radio on September
12, 1932 in a syndicated serial that lasted for 286 episodes. It was
titled TARZAN OF THE APES. Of the first serial, only the first 77
episodes are known to have survived.

The success of TARZAN OF THE APES prompted Mr. Burroughs to produce
his own Tarzan radio serial, TARZAN AND THE DIAMOND OF ASHAIR based
on the book "Tarzan And The Forbidden City". This serial started on
May 14, 1934, airing Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, consisting of
39 episodes. It was directed by Fred Shields and narrated by John
McIntire. The cast list is shown below. The full run is available
to collectors.

                              Cast List
                     ----------------------------
                     Tarzan - Carlton KaDell
                     D'Arnot - Ralph Scott
                     Helen - Karena Shields
                     Gregory - George Turner
                     Magra - Jeannette Nolan
                     Atan Thome - Cy Kendall
                     Lal Taask - Don Wilson
                     Wolf - Victor Rodman
                     Larson - Victor Potel
                     Mitchell - Fred Harrington

The third and last serial produced was TARZAN AND THE FIRES OF TOHR.
This series never aired although all 39 episodes are available to
collectors. The radio listening audience had to wait until 1951 to
again hear the adventures of Tarzan when the Mutual Don-Lee network
broadcast the TARZAN, LORD OF THE JUNGLE series.

Log Comments:

Episode titles were not given in the shows. Some OTR vendors create
their own titles, descriptive of the particular episode. For this
log, titles are from Steve Kelez' Radio Showcase catalog. The only
other catalog that showed titles that I found was Ted Davenport's
Radio Memories.

Besides OTR catalogs and web sites, much information was obtained
from non-OTR Internet sites. Most notable was Bill Hillman's
ERBzin-e, an Edgar Rice Burroughs' fan site, which offers a synopsis
of each episode and other information. The main site address is
http://home.westman.wave.ca/~hillmans/erbmg101.html. Another notable
web site is http://www.tarzan.org, which offered a history of Tarzan,
including the radio series.
