Lux Episode Confirmed

As mentioned in the April 4 post, a previously uncirculating Lux Radio Theatre episode has indeed been uncovered! What’s interesting about this find is that it comes from a commercial cassette that was sold years ago, not from some veteran’s collection. Commenting on such a find, Dr. Joe Webb said, “It happens — it’s really amazing — many times veteran collectors don’t look at these recordings because at first glance they think they have it already. So only casual listeners get it, and they have never heard that there was a hobby, so the recordings can sit for years “hiding in plain sight.” I’m still finding all kinds of things related to Suspense in old reel and pre-2000 cassette collections. It’s always a surprise.”

Here is Joe’s version of the file, cleaned a bit with the two cassette sides edited together more seamlessly.

Suspense Update #3

The latest Suspense episode posted on Facebook by Bruce Frey from the Don Frey collection. It is from September 20, 1955. According to Joe Webb this is not a new episode or a new version of an episode but a better quality recording than the other copies he has heard floating around. You can save it directly to your own pCloud account if you have one or download it to your computer. You may have to scroll down a bit to see those options. Joe has cleaned up the original dub a bit.

Suspense Update #2

Here’s the third Suspense posted by Dr. Bruce Frey from the Don Frey collection. It is October 12, 1950, an episode that is in circulation. Dr. Joe Webb was very interested in it because this version is a KNX air check so not the same recording that is already circulating. Here are some of his thoughts from the Facebook post: “Some collectors like to find every variety of recording of a broadcast they can. Some call us “completists” who look for the studio copies, AFRS/AFRTS, private recordings, home airchecks, station airchecks, and other formats. The studio recordings will almost always sound better unless the transcriptions were damaged in some way. In many cases, the studio recordings don’t exist or are not available, so we have to rely on other sources. But when you can get different versions of the same broadcasts, to some collectors it’s a really great find! There are many different styles to collecting and since it’s a hobby we get to choose what kind of collecting we’d like to do.”

2 New Suspense Episodes

Thanks to the sleuthing of Dr. Joe Webb, the digitizing efforts of Dr. Bruce Frey, and the collection of legendary OTR collector Don Frey, two new episodes of Suspense have been uncovered and put into circulation! For now they can be downloaded here:

  1. 1946-06-27 “Return Trip” East Coast Version
  2. “The Hand” ca. 1960. Here’s what Dr. Frey noted about this recording: “Now that I have the opportunity to be at home and on my computer more than usual, it’s time I started posting some hard-to-find Suspense episodes. These are in my father, Don Frey’s, collection. He is not computer savvy, so I have begun digitizing them, and will share them here. Joe Webb and Ryan Ellett of this group have identified some episodes from his catalog that are not in general circulation. Let’s begin with “1960 (??) ‘The Hand’ by Mel Dinelli; Supposedly a presentation offered to Suspense, but not produced.” It sounds like a demo recording to me. It’s drug theme may have kept it off the air.”

OTRR Group Forum

We’ve had requests to publicize the address for the Old Time Radio Researchers’ main discussion and research forum. For almost 20 years we existed as a Yahoo Group. Several years ago we spun off to a Facebook group while keep the Yahoo Group operational. In December of 2019 Yahoo shut down most of the functionality of their Yahoo Groups; they basically act a email list-servs now. In response, we created a new main group with Groups.io to continue on the discussions and work that go into all of our projects. The address for this new group is: https://oldtimeradioresearchers.groups.io/g/main

We do not charge any fees to be a member of the OTRR Group. However, you may join our Purchasing Group for $5 per month and receive new material on a periodic basis.

Hope to see you on Groups.io!
